Early Dismissal Today
By now you have probably heard that all HCPSS schools are being dismissed 90 minutes early, today, December 15. That means that our students will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. Enjoy the extra time and please be safe!
Homework-free Winter Break
Yes, it’s true! We hope this will give our kids a chance to relax and recharge, while also enabling families to fully enjoy their time together over the break.
Congratulations to Our Students!
The Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County (TCOE) in collaboration with HCPSS sponsors an annual Celebration of Academic Achievement to acknowledge and honor students of African and African-American heritage across the county. For more information, and for a complete list of the Mayfield students who were honored, click here. Visit our Twitter page to see pictures from the event!
What’s all the buzzzzz?
Last week we held our school wide Spelling Bee. Click here for more information, to see a list of participants and to see our school wide winners!
Winter Concerts!
Kudos to the students in our chorus, concert chorus, chamber chorus, concert band, and symphonic band! Hopefully you were able to make it to Long Reach High School this week to see our fantastic winter concerts. Interested in seeing pictures or short videos? Be sure to visit my Instagram or our school’s Twitter page. Also, the orchestra concert is Monday at Long Reach – you are not going to want to miss it!
#onemayfield
Yesterday we concluded our last #onemayfield day with our 6th graders. As you know, over the past 2 months we have had three #onemayfield days – one for each grade. These events were designed to create an opportunity for students and staff to come together in a facilitated discussion designed to highlight, celebrate, and honor the differences that exist between us. If you want more information about #onemayfield, click here to visit our website or call us at school at 410-313-5022 (main office) or 410-313-5025 (student services).
My child will be absent for a few days, what should I do?
Your child is entitled to make-up up missed work due when he/she has an excused absence from school. Please click here to review the guidelines for requesting missed work so that your child has access his/her assignments in the quickest way possible.
Social Media Guidelines for Students
We live in an age where social media is a primary way that our kids (and even we) communicate with each other. There are even times that students (who are allowed to) may choose to use social media for HCPSS related activities, in which case they should adhere to the Student Code of Conduct and HCPSS Policy 8080 - Responsible Use of Technology and Social Media. Please take a few minutes to review the HCPSS Guidelines for Use of Social Media and Communication Tools - Student Responsibilities.
Cold Weather
The weather is beginning to get much colder, so please encourage your child to dress appropriately on such days. As a reminder, students are not permitted to wear coats in school. They may, however, wear layers - including sweatshirts or sweaters - in case they get chilly. It is important that students are dressed appropriately for PE and recess; in accordance with HCPSS guidelines, children will go outside unless there is precipitation or the outside temperature combined with the wind chill drops below 20 degrees. For more information, click here.
Do you drive your child to school?
If so, we kindly ask that you avoid parking in the “drop-off” lane, even if you are in the car. If you need to park, please use our parking lot so that we can keep the drop-off lane moving. We want to maintain a safe drop-off for our students. When cars park in this lane, it causes a back-up and/or other cars have to pull-around, creating a potentially unsafe situation. Thanks for your understanding and support!
Finally, since there will not be another school newsletter until January 5, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy holiday season. I hope you enjoy this time with your family, and that you have a memorable and fun winter break. I look forward to seeing all of you in 2018!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Melissa Shindel
Principal
