MWMS Newsletter, 11/17/17

From the Principal’s Desk

Thanksgiving is upon us, and I would be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to thank our parents and families for sending us your curious and creative children each and every day.  It is a joy to teach them and watch them grow, and I am so thankful for everything you do at home to support and encourage them.  Thank you, also, to each of you for your contributions in helping to make the Mayfield Woods community a special place – whether you have chaperoned a field trip, joined and supported the PTA, volunteered at our school store, book fair or ticket table for the school play or dance, helped your child with homework, donated items for staff appreciation, chaperoned our fall dance, stayed overnight at outdoor ed, attended the meet and greets, visited classrooms during American Education Week, assisted with our music programs, donated to support Terry Smith after a tragic fire, came to school for a meeting or spent time on the phone with your child’s counselors, administrators or teachers – I could go on and on about all of the ways you are involved in your child’s education and in the Mayfield community. Everything you do makes a huge difference, and for all of these things, I thank you.

A few updates as we head into the Thanksgiving break:

The Howard County Board of Education is seeking public input as it moves forward with the process of selecting a permanent superintendent, who will be appointed to a four-year term to commence on July 1, 2018.  Further, the Board of Education will host two forums for the public to attend and provide direct input on the superintendent search process. Click here for more information about the two forums, and the link to access the online survey.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest deadline has been extended until 5:00 PM, Friday, December 8, 2017.   The event theme this year is, "If I cannot do great things, I will do small things in a great way" and the essay theme is, "How do you translate Dr. King's vision in today's times?" Click here for more information.

Is Your Child Interested in a Leadership Opportunity? Is your child passionate about student leadership? Is your child someone who wants to voice his/her opinions and make a difference? Does your child want to be a part of making history? If you answered yes to any of these questions, your child is the right person to step up for the Student Delegate leadership opportunity.  Want to know more and how to apply?  Click here but do so soon – the deadline is December 1!

Reminder! Federal Impact Aid Surveys are due back to school on November 28.  Please click here for more information. Thank you!

Howard County Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) Anna Selbrede will be holding an open forum for any and all HCPSS students to voice any questions, concerns, or just talk. Anna is happy to discuss anything from school lunches to sports to current political events to Harry Potter. The forum will be held at the Homewood School on December 13th, from 6:30-7:00 PM. If you can’t make it this month, you can come next time on January 10th. Refreshments will be provided! If you’d like more information, email student_member@hcpss.org and don’t forget to follow @Hocosmob on Instagram and Twitter.

New! Bulldog BRAG Board! We know your kids are doing amazing things outside of school, and we want to hear about them!  Click here to learn about our new “Bulldog BRAG Board”, including a copy of the BRAG form and directions as to how to submit it! Also, be sure to check out the BRAG Board when you’re at Mayfield for conferences next week – it’s in the hallway near the gym and cafeteria.

Once again, thanks for all you do and I wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

Melissa Shindel
Principal

The Johns Hopkins Center for Language and Speech Processing invites any high school or middle school students who might be interested in language, psychology, math, or computer science to come to our campus for Puzzles, Pizza, and Prizes and to take part in the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad (NACLO). Computational linguistics is the science of understanding human language using logic, computer algorithms, and math. It is all around us! You use computational linguistics whenever you use Google, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, Yahoo, and many other websites and applications. If you watched IBM's Watson take on Jeopardy champions several years ago, that was computational linguistics in action!

NACLO Main Events:

The first round competition, which selects the U.S. team for the International Linguistics Olympiad, is scheduled for Thursday, January 25, 2018. We are hosting an informational training session with Puzzles, Pizza, and Prizes on Saturday, January 13, 2018 on the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus. We will help your students prepare for the competition and learn about computational linguistics (and how it's used in cool research at major tech companies). They'll learn new ways to solve problems and puzzles, work together with other students, and earn prizes. Anyone is welcome to come to the practice session even if they can't make it to the competition! NACLO is open to students regardless of their background in math, science, linguistics, or languages.

Our website has more information about NACLO and Computational Linguistics: http://naclo.clsp.jhu.edu

You can find example problems on the NACLO site: http://nacloweb.org/
