1/11/19 - Update on No Place for Hate®

In December we notified our community that Mayfield Woods and all HCPSS middle schools were participating in the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) No Place for Hate® campaign (see original posting below).  We were happy to see the importance of school-based activities that promote diversity, equity and inclusion being supported so broadly across schools, reaffirming the important work we have done with our own #onemayfield campaign for the past three years.

Schools were recently informed that HCPSS schools will no longer seek the No Place for Hate® designation by ADL.  Instead, HCPSS will focus on institutionalizing this important work into our curriculum and culture, so that it becomes a part of an ongoing permanent effort of nurturing safe and inclusive school environments, and not as an “add-on” program.    We will continue to do so through our #onemayfield activities and dialogues, and through the beliefs and values of restorative justice.

Click here for more information about #onemayfield.   As a reminder, our next #onemayfield day is coming up on January 28. If you are interested in donating so that each student can assemble a “Code Blue Meal Kit” for the Grass Roots Crisis Intervention Center, click here for more information.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Howard County Public School System and Mayfield Woods Middle School believe that having a school community where your child feels safe and respected is an important foundation to their academic success. That is why Mayfield Woods Middle School and all other HCPSS middle schools will be participating in No Place for Hate®, a national program supporting schools in their commitment to celebrating diversity, promoting respect for differences, and challenging bias and bullying at all levels.

Developed by the ADL (Anti-Defamation League) – a leading civil rights organization that has worked for over a century to “secure justice and fair treatment to all” – No Place for Hate® will help us incorporate new anti-bias and bullying prevention resources into our existing programs in order to have one consistent message of inclusivity.

You and your child can help support our No Place for Hate® program in a number of ways:

  • Join our No Place for Hate® Committee to help oversee the program, assess school climate, and plan or volunteer at No Place for Hate® events!

  • Along with your child, sign the No Place for Hate® Promise/ Resolution of Respect to commit to challenging bias and bullying!

  • Practice No Place for Hate® at home! For family resources on challenging bullying and bias, visit www.adl.org.

To learn more or to get involved with No Place for Hate® at Mayfield Woods Middle School please contact Susan Bradley by December 14 via email at at susan_bradley@hcpss.org.  With your help, we will make our school community an even safer and more welcoming space for all.

Sincerely,

Melissa Shindel
