MWMS Newsletter, April 27, 2018

From the Principal’s Desk

PARCC starts on Monday!  The 2018 Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career (PARCC) assessments will be administered from April 30 – May 25, 2018.  Students will test in both English Language Arts (ELA) and math.  It is essential that all students come to school on-time on testing days, and we ask that you not schedule appointments or early dismissals on those days as well.  For more information, including your child’s PARCC test dates, click here for more information.

Our first Career Day was an overwhelming success, and we hope to make this an annual event for our 7th grade students. Thank you to all of the community members (some of them MWMS parents!) who gave up their time to spend the afternoon with our students:

  • Edwardo Aguirre - Tissue Specialist
  • Patricia Anderson - Nurse Intern
  • Nazaret Berhane - Program Manager/Language Analyst
  • Heather Fountain - Medical Technologist
  • Kurt Hustead - FOX News
  • Brandon Lapp – Police
  • Kristin Mentz - Member Engagement Liaison
  • Nathan Mower and Company - Air Force, Military Linguist
  • Sandy Saperstein - Public Health
  • Rejil Solis, Sr. - Field Services Specialist
  • Calvin St. Juste - Social Media Specialist
  • Jenyese Tanner, Owner / Hairstylist
  • Lori Tolen – Occupational Therapist
  • Tina Zaky - Business Owner

The 8th grade “panoramic photo” will be taken this Tuesday, May 1!  Click here for ordering information.

Attention 8th Grade Parents:  Save the Date!  We are still working out the final details, but this year we will have our first annual 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony on Thursday morning, June 7 (or at least our first in a long time, no one is quite sure if Mayfield has done this in the past).  We are excited about starting a new tradition!  More details will be sent home soon, but in the meantime, we need your help.    We would like to have a slide show featuring each of our eighth graders.  We are looking for two pictures per student, one photo when your child was a baby/toddler and one photo that is more recent.  Please send the pictures to Ms. Hutzell electronically at loretta_hutzell@hcpss.org no later than May 18. Thank you!

This week was Administrative Professionals Week, and I would like to take a moment to thank Ms. Mosso, Ms. Van Nort, Ms. Closson, Ms. Clark and Ms. Steele for everything they do to make Mayfield Woods a wonderful and safe place for our students, staff and community. I see the millions of things they juggle every minute - all with a smile on their faces, humor and care in their words, and kindness in their actions.  I wish to give them a huge, heartfelt THANK YOU for all they do!   If one of them has helped you or brightened your time while visiting Mayfield, please feel free to send them a note - I am sure they would appreciate it (their emails are linked to their names, above)!

As we head into the final 2 months of school, we ask that you please review a few things with your students.   Kids typically start to get “excited” as we head into May, and we want to have smooth ending.

Dress Code

Per HCPSS Student Dress Code Policy 9210:

  1. Students are not allowed to wear hats, hoods, bandanas, or other head coverings unless it is for religious observation. Many students have begun to wear hoods in school, and some students need to be asked repeatedly throughout the day to remove them.   Please speak to your child about not wearing headcoverings (please contact your child’s counselor or an administrator if it is for a religious reason)
  2. Students are not permitted to wear attire that unduly exposes or reveals skin or undergarments. Many students have been wearing shirts that expose their midriff or undergarments, and others have been wearing pants too low, exposing undergarments. These items make other students and staff uncomfortable. If students come to school wearing clothing that unduly exposes or reveals skin or undergarments, students are going to be asked to call home for a change of clothes.

We respectfully ask that you review the dress code policy, specifically regarding the items listed above.  Violations may result in a loss of privileges at school, and we really do not want to have to do that. We appreciate your support and understanding.

Cell Phones

Our phone policy allows students to carry phones with them, but they must be off or silent during the school day.  Exceptions include lunch, recess, or in class WITH PERMISSION ONLY.  We should not see phones in use OR earbuds at any time, unless it is during lunch – this includes hallways.  We respectfully ask that you do not call or text your child during the school day unless you know when he or she is at lunch.  If you have an emergency message for your child, please call the office so we can assist. As a reminder, if students are in violation of our cell phone policy, we are going to take cell phones and return them only to parents during regular school hours.

School supplies

Students are expected to come to class with the materials they need.  Many students have been coming to class without pens, pencils, and loose leaf paper.  Please ask your child if he or she needs more supplies.  If you need assistance with supplies, please contact your child’s school counselor or an administrator.

Thank you for your ongoing support, and for all you to do to partner with us to make Mayfield a wonderful place for kids

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Melissa Shindel
Principal
