On Monday, October 23, Mayfield Woods will host different events during the day celebrating Red Ribbon Week.

Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the US.  The Red Ribbon Campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. This began the continuing tradition of displaying Red Ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs. The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a drug-free America.

7th and 8th grade students will attend an assembly in the morning on October 23.  DEA agents will do a presentation that usually involves audience participation.  Students may be called up to try on different equipment, and they will have a chance to agents ask questions.  

During lunch/recess, an area will be set up with police cars, a DEA Clan Lab truck and a K-9 from the Howard County Police Department.  Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 will have a chance to speak to officers, tour the truck, and ask questions.
